Marlene Dumas (South Africa) is a world-renowned painter based in Amsterdam. In her famous depictions of the human figure, she confronts the viewer with the controversies surrounding modern society. Identity, and the tensions between public and private, are trademarks of her work.
Born in South Africa, Dumas studied at the University of Cape Town. Later she moved to the Netherlands, where she studied painting and psychology. She has remained resident in Amsterdam ever since, creating works throughout her long career. She has exhibited worldwide and her works have been added to various museum collections, from Japan and USA, to Germany and Finland.
