Expert Session #1 – The Value of €uropean Culture

How can we measure the economic value of European culture?

Thu, 02 Jun • 09:00
De Balie - Salon

In 2008, the financial crisis hit Europe. The fall of the stock market dragged the cultural market down with it, and culture budgets were the first to be hit by cutbacks. Theatres, orchestras, artists and cultural institutions were forced to close their doors.

In times of drastic political and economic change, culture is often the most overlooked value: we tend to forget that the cultural industry is the third largest economic sector in Europe and accounts for 4.2% of the EU’s GDP. Time to rethink culture in economic terms.

In cooperation with the European think tank Bruegel and the consultancy firm Strategy&, we investigate the economic value of culture for Europe.

Contributors are among others:

Arjo Klamer (Professor of Economics of Arts and Culture at Erasmus University, Netherlands), Elisabetta Lazzaro (Professor of Creative Economy at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht, Netherlands), Luc Tuymans (artist, Belgium), Rita de Graeve (Advisor – Policyholder Culture and Economics, department of Culture, Youth, Sports, and Media, Belgium), Peter Mensing (consultant at Strategy &, The Netherlands), Dirk Schoenmaker (Professor of Banking and Finance at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands), Monique de Louwere (Secretary of Visual Arts, Design and Architure, Council for Culture), Jacques de Swart (PWC, The Netherlands), Rita de Graeve (Advisor – Policyholder Culture and Economics, department of Culture, Youth, Sports, and Media, Belgium).

This expert session will be in English.
