The Suppliants, Aeschylos’ classic tragedy, recounts the story of a group of women fleeing forced marriage and domestic violence, seeking asylum in a city unknown to them. The king of the city is in doubt: should he let them in, and what are the consequences?
During the Forum, we present the European première of the Suppliants. This performance is developed with director Celil Toksöz and musically supported by a choir of Kurdish-Dutch women. It’s a modern interpretation of an age-old story that evokes questions about our current day. After the performance, the audience weighs in.
After an idea from Bryan Doerries and based on the concept of his ensemble Theater of War. They developed the Suppliants in the United States in close cooperation with the Caribbean Garifuna community.
