On June 1, Re:Creating Europe, the first Forum on European Culture in Amsterdam will open with a unique performance by the British actor Jude Law, the German actor Lars Eidinger and Dutch actors Gijs Scholten van Aschat, Hugo Koolschijn and Chris Nietvelt from Toneelgroep Amsterdam. The performance will be directed by one of the world’s leading theatre directors, Ivo van Hove.
Re:Creating Europe – about the Opening
What is Europe? Is it a continent, a collective culture, a bygone dream, a mutual solidarity, or the ability to forgive? In moments that most defined European history, great thinkers—from François Mitterrand to Barack Obama—have found the words to express the very notion of Europe. It is now, in 2016, a year that saw Europe’s future hanging in the balance, that European actors will bring Europe’s defining historic and fictional speeches to life: a launching pad for a new way of imagining tomorrow’s Europe.
Last week Toneelgroep Amsterdam announced that Jude Law is to return to the theatre in an adaptation of Luchino Visconti’s Obsession, directed by Ivo van Hove. The production will premiere in april 2017 in London. The opening of Re:Creating Europe will be the first stage performance by Jude Law directed by Ivo van Hove.
Together with Jude Law, the German actor Lars Eidinger will also perform in Amsterdam. Eidinger is best known for his role in the film Clouds of Sils Maria (Olivier Assayas, 2014), with Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart.
