Dienke Hondius

Dienke Hondius (The Netherlands, 1960) is Associate Professor of Contemporary History at the VU (Free University) Amsterdam. Her research topics include the history of ‘race’ and racism, in particular the Dutch contributions since 1600, with books such as Dutch New York Histories (2017) connecting African, native American and slavery heritage, and Blackness in Western Europe. Racial patterns of paternalism and exclusion (2014) in which she identified ideas and attitudes towards “blackness” or the concept of race as a visible difference.
