Artur Żmijewski (Poland, 1966) is a visual artist, filmmaker and photographer. Born in Warsaw in 1966, Zmijewski grew up under Soviet-imposed communism and at one point, martial law. As the communist regime fell apart and was swapped for capitalist ideals, Zmijewski came of age bombarded by opposing ideologies. Zmijewski has said it’s not enough for art to ask questions. Rather, artists need to get real and provide some arguments. If the arguments he puts forward can seem bleak, it’s up to his audience to come back with something more convincing.
