Luuk van Middelaar

Luuk van Middelaar ( The Netherlands, 1973) is a Dutch historian and political philosopher. From December 2009 to 2014 van Middelaar was member of the cabinet of Herman van Rompuy, the first President of the European Council. He is widely known for his book The Passage to Europe (2013), for which he won the European Book Prize. In this book he is trying to understand the forces that underpin the European Union, hold it together and drive it forward. Currently van Middelaar is a columnist for NRC Handelsblad and is a professor at the University of Leiden.
