Luuk van Middelaar (1973, NL) is a political theorist and commentator. He is a Professor of Foundations and Practice of the European Union and its Institutions at the Europa Institute of Leiden University and was the speechwriter and advisor of the former President of the European Council, H.A Van Rompuy (2010-2014). He is famous for his awarded publication ‘The Passage to Europe: How a Continent Became a Union (2009) and is co-editor of the recently published book ‘Na de storm Hoe we de democratie in Europa kunnen redden’ (2015) in which Europe’s leading thinkers reflect on the future of Europe’s democracies. Van Middelaar writes a column for the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad and publishes in other newspapers including Die Zeit and Le Monde.
