Seyran Ates (Germany, 1963) is a German lawyer and Muslim feminist born in Istanbul. She studied at the Free University of Berlin and has been advocating for equal right for Muslim woman and girls ever since. Her views are highly critical of an immigrant Muslim society that is often more conservative than tis counterpart in Turkey In 2017, Ates opened the Ibn Ruschd-Goethe mosque which is the first liberal mosque in Germany where men and women pray together and women can take the role of the imam. Subsequently, the Turkish religious authority and the Egyptian Fatwa Council have condemned her project and has received many death threats over the years.
