Sign of the Times:
José Manuel Barroso

Combining debate and theatre, we’ll discuss the theme of European winners and losers of globalisation with former president of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso.

This evening is curated by De Balie and Internationaal Theater Amsterdam in the run-up to the Forum on European Culture.

Tue, 07 Apr • 20:00
Internationaal Theater Amsterdam – Rabozaal

He was the most powerful man of Europe for 10 straight years: the former Portuguese prime minister and president of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso.

Surprisingly, his impressive political career started out as the leader of a Maoist student movement. He faced a wave of criticism in 2016 when he announced that he would be joining Goldman Sachs International as a chairman.

Combining debate and theatre, De Balie Director Yoeri Albrecht will enter into conversation with Barroso about Europe, ideology, power, winners and losers – to offer the audience an inside look at the ideas and ideals of the beneficiaries of globalisation.

Does he understand why so many citizens today do not feel represented by European administrators?
