Belgian documentary film director Jef Cornelis has documented the artistic and public debate around the exhibition Sonsbeek ’71, resulting in a humorous portrait of the modern art world in the seventies. Questioning the idea of locality in a globalised art world and the enormous budgets behind large international exhibitions, the film brings to life discussions that are all too familiar in the 21st century.
In this program, we will discuss the globalization of the European art world through large-scale exhibitions such as Sonsbeek ’71, or the Biannual of Venice and the Documenta exhibitions. With a panel of experts consisting of visual artists Zachary Formwalt, Wendelien van Oldenborgh and Liesbeth Bik as well as art historian Anja Novak, we ask how these huge exhibitions have influenced the cultural capital of Europe.
